Which is Healthier: Tap Water or Bottled Water? →
TLDR: Tap Water, by a huge margin. Also, bottled water has a HUGE carbon footprint.

US judge orders hundreds of sites "de-indexed"... →
Why wait for SOPA or Protect-IP when a Nevada judge can just order websites not even hosted or handled in the US seized because one company says “we think they aren’t being fair”.

I’m not trying to politicize here, but seriously - this person is so wrong for the job. Any job. At all.

Anybody can submit their floor plan for inclusion with this new “indoor mapping”. Kinda neat - and very useful for some of the bigger buildings you end up in (airports come to mind).

PolitiFact →
This site does a good job of wading through the various shades of grey that come out of various members of the political arena. Politico has a good article about fact checker services like this and includes PolitiFact as sometimes contended because of their subjective use of their “Truth-o-meter”, but generally it’s respected as being unbiased.

Anne McCaffrey Has Died →
Her Pern novels were some of the first fantasy books I ever read and set the groundwork for much of the dragon lore used in the fantasy genre today.

Cave Johnson
Cave Johnson in Portal 2 is hilarious. Totally hilarious. Go look him up on the YouTube. 2 Quotes: “Alright, I’ve been thinking. When life gives you lemons don’t make lemonade, make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave...

Bob Ostertag: Militarization Of Campus Police →
UC Davis professor writes about the violence police used on students exercising their right for peaceful protest this weekend. It is unrelated to OWS. I know.. I said no soap box… but he writes a very good article about the differences between how peaceful protests were handled in the past and how they have been handled the last couple weeks.

Police as Civilian
To very roughly paraphrase Terry Pratchett from his novel Snuff: “Coppers that forget they are also civilians are no longer coppers - they are soldiers.” Obviously Terry said it better (and if I had the book in front of me I’d track down the specific quote - and will if anybody is interested), but I think the feeling that Police are somehow separate from the community they...

Customer Service Voice
I know it’s a bad day when I use my “Customer Service Voice” towards everyone I talk to… If you’ve ever worked customer service, or spoke to customer service during a frustrating conversation, then you know this voice. It’s that voice that sounds sweet and nice but inside there is a raging torrent of vile thoughts. I’m guessing it’s the voice most...
